5 Tips to Stay Organised with Seasonal Decor
It often surprises people when they find out how much I love seasonal decor considering I am a Professional Home Organiser. Particularly with how ruthless I am in my own home that can appear to some to border on minimalism (even though I don’t advocate minimalism. I am an intentionalist crusader true and through).
I believe that regular decluttering and being aware of your consumption cycle (the rate at which new items come into your home) are the key to having space and room for what matters most to you. And something I value is the magic and whimsy of celebrating by decorating. Curating little areas of my home to make me smile and create a fun, warming and welcoming element of my home.
I am an Australian that embraces the Spooky Season of Halloween in October and my enthusiasm for Northern Hemisphere Autumn. As Richard Gilmore once said “I am an Autumn”. The irony is that I was born in March, which is actually the start of Autumn in the Southern Hemisphere and I always love the time of year around my birthday. But as much as I love the turn of the season out of winter and into Spring in September in Queensland, Australia where I live; when Starbucks releases their Pumpkin Spice range during this time in line with America my seasonal whimsy and love for all things Autumn just takes over. However, I do love Spring Cleaning (it’s an all-year sport for me if I’m honest) but if you need some help in this area make sure to get my FREE SPRING CLEANING CHECKLISTS HERE.
But I don't want you to think I encourage mindless consumption of every seasonal knick-knack you see so here are my tips for beautiful intentional seasonal decorating (with a touch of whimsy).
Tip #1: Assess what you already have for the season
Before purchasing anything new I always recommend an audit and potential declutter of existing items. Ensure that you have collated all items together to assist with ensuring these items get reused and put out to be enjoyed. Use the next tip to help you further drill down on what you can potentially declutter….
Tip #4: Budget by space of the home
Limit your spending by committing to a few items for a certain area for this year. And use your Pinterest moodboard to keep you accountable to the same style for a different area of the home the next year. To explain this further using Christmas as an example; I love my Christmas Tree and decorations I have for my tree. I don’t need to buy more. However last year I focused on buying more decor for my floating shelves and garland. So I could expand the feel in my split level living, dining and kitchen area. This year I am hosting Christmas lunch; so I strategically have bought some table linens and decorations in the same style as my tree and shelving decor along with a few throw cushions for my lounge.
Tip #5: Get creative each year!
If you have done all of the above and know you are at capacity and having a no-spend year for new additions, challenge yourself to use your existing items in different spots of the home or in new setups to keep you inspired by those pieces.
Regular decluttering of the home and having organised systems are more important than ever but if you like decorating for festive seasons and occasions don’t allow yourself to feel guilt for wanting to enjoy your home. Life’s too short to be too serious and think that decorating for the season is just clutter. It’s not if you enjoy it, and reuse it year on year as a backdrop for your family memories and fun.
